This position offers an opportunity for qualified professional nurses to join the team at Wesfleur Hospital, working within the Metro Health Services directorate of the Western Cape Department of Health. The successful candidates will be appointed as Professional Nurses at Grade 1, 2, or 3 in the general ward, with the specific grade determined by the applicant's years of relevant nursing experience. As a general ward nurse, the role is centred on delivering comprehensive, holistic nursing care to patients while ensuring that all practice aligns with established professional, legal, and ethical frameworks governing nursing in South Africa. The role also involves supporting the Operational Manager in the day-to-day functioning of the unit, and nurses at senior grades are expected to assist with the management of human resources, including staff oversight and compliance with regulations.
Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing, such as a diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification (R683 plus R254) that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. Alternatively, a four-year bachelor's degree in nursing (R174) or an equivalent qualification (R683 plus R1497 or R171 plus R1497) is acceptable. All candidates must be registered with SANC as a Professional Nurse. Experience requirements vary by grade: for Grade 1, no experience is required after registration; for Grade 2, a minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognisable experience in general nursing is required; and for Grade 3, at least twenty years of such experience is required. The inherent demands of the post include working shifts, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as a willingness to rotate within the institution. Computer literacy is a necessary skill.
The duties are broad and patient-centred. The nurse will provide optimal, holistic nursing care within set standards, and will assist with people management services within the department while ensuring compliance with professional, legal, and ethical regulations. There is also a responsibility to utilise financial and physical resources effectively, promote quality assurance, and support infection prevention and control as well as occupational health and safety measures. Additionally, the role requires delivering support services to the Operational Manager, while maintaining professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development. This is an OSD-graded position, and candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration requirements may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for first-time registration with SANC and proof of payment of the prescribed fees on or before the day of the interview. No payment of any kind is required when applying, and a practical test may form part of the selection process.
