This position is for a Professional Nurse at Grades 1, 2, or 3 specialising in general nursing, with two posts available at Ladismith Hospital in the Garden Route District of the Western Cape. The role sits within the provincial Department of Health and forms part of a broader institutional ecosystem, meaning that while the primary workplace is Ladismith Hospital, appointees may be required to render clinical services across other institutions within the ecosystem as needed to maintain uninterrupted health service delivery. This is an OSD-graded nursing post, and the successful candidate will be expected to provide high-quality, patient-centred general nursing care within a hospital environment.
Applicants must hold a basic nursing qualification as per the R425 diploma or degree, or an equivalent such as R683 plus R254, that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Alternatively, a four-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing under R174, or equivalent combinations such as R683 plus R1497 or R171 plus R1497, is acceptable. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is a mandatory requirement. For appointment at Grade 1, no prior nursing experience is needed. Grade 2 requires at least ten years of appropriate and recognisable experience in general nursing after registration, while Grade 3 requires twenty years of such experience. Candidates who do not yet hold the stipulated registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for first-time registration with the relevant council and payment of the prescribed fees on or before the day of the interview; this concession is limited to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category.
The role demands a willingness to work shifts, night duty, overtime, public holidays, and weekends, as well as a readiness to rotate to different wards within the hospital. Key competencies include basic computer literacy in MS Office, the ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure good patient care, excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, and sound knowledge of nursing practices and infection prevention and control measures.
Duties involve providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing plan in clinical practice or patient care, implementing standards, practices, criteria, and indicators for quality nursing, and practising nursing and healthcare in accordance with the laws and regulations applicable to the profession. The nurse will maintain constructive working relationships with nursing colleagues and other stakeholders, utilise human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively, participate in training, development, and research within the nursing department, and provide support to nursing services overall. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, and interested candidates are advised to review the full application process and closing date details on the official Western Cape Government health jobs portal.
