This is a three-month contract position for a Professional Nurse Grade 1 to 3 (General) within the Nursing Relief Team at Alexandra Hospital, operating under the Directorate of Metro Health Services. The role is part of a structured nursing grading system, meaning the appointment level will depend on the successful candidate’s years of recognisable experience in general nursing after registration with the South African Nursing Council. As a relief team member, the post requires flexibility and a willingness to be deployed across all departments and wards of the hospital according to operational needs. The incumbent must be prepared to work shifts, including day and night duty, weekends, and public holidays, ensuring that nursing services remain fully staffed at all times.
Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification such as R683 plus R880, which permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Registration with the SANC is a mandatory requirement. For appointment at Grade 1, no prior nursing experience is required. Grade 2 applicants must have at least ten years of recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing, while Grade 3 applicants need a minimum of twenty years of such experience. Candidates who do not yet have the required registration may still apply, but they must submit proof of application for registration to the relevant council, along with proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees, on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status.
The role demands a solid understanding of nursing care processes, procedures, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern professional practice. Computer literacy in MS Office and MS Outlook is essential, as are strong communication and report-writing skills. Experience in providing comprehensive nursing treatment and care to patients in a Mental Health Unit is particularly relevant and will be an advantage in this setting. The duties include delivering optimal, holistic nursing care within set standards and a professional legal framework, making effective use of available resources, and maintaining professional growth and ethical standards through continuous self-development. The nurse will also provide support to the broader nursing services and participate in training and research activities as required.
This is an OSD-graded post, and the salary level will be determined according to the grade at which the successful candidate is appointed. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this position. Enquiries may be directed to the contact person named in the advertisement. Because this is a relief team role, adaptability and a commitment to maintaining high-quality care across different clinical environments are essential qualities for success. The position offers an opportunity to gain diverse experience within a hospital setting while contributing to the resilience of the nursing workforce.
