This permanent Professional Nurse position is based at Karl Bremer Hospital in the Outpatient Department, operating within the Northern/Tygerberg sub-structure of the Western Cape Government’s Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services. The role is graded at Professional Nurse levels 1 to 3, meaning the appointment level and corresponding remuneration are determined by the candidate’s years of appropriate nursing experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council. It offers an opportunity to work in a public hospital setting, delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients attending the outpatient unit, and forms part of a multidisciplinary team committed to quality healthcare delivery.

The core duties involve providing optimal, holistic nursing care within established standards and a professional and legal framework. The successful candidate will be expected to utilise resources effectively, maintain professional growth and ethical standards, support the broader nursing services, and actively participate in training and research initiatives. Because the work is in an outpatient department, the environment is often fast-paced, requiring strong planning and organisational skills, the ability to function independently under pressure, and sound knowledge of nursing protocols and policies applicable in a hospital setting. The role also demands flexibility, as the incumbent must be willing to work shifts, including day and night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime, and to rotate to other wards when operational requirements dictate.

Applicants must hold a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification such as R683 plus R254, that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Alternatively, a four-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing (R174) or equivalent combinations such as R683 plus R1497 or R171 plus R1497 is accepted. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is a key requirement. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 requires no prior nursing experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration, and Grade 3 requires at least twenty years of such experience. Computer literacy in MS Word and Excel is essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

A notable concession exists for candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration requirements. They may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees, either with their application or upon appointment. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who must change their registration status. All candidates will be subjected to a written or practical assessment and an oral interview. The position is permanent and offers standard public service benefits associated with an OSD-graded nursing post, including a thirteenth cheque, pension fund contributions, and housing and medical aid allowances. This is a valuable opportunity for both newly qualified and experienced professional nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in the Cape Town metro.
