PROFESSIONAL NURSE GRADE 1 TO 2 (SPECIALTY: TRAUMA AND EMERGENCY AND OPD) Cape Winelands Health District

This position offers an opportunity to work as a Professional Nurse within the Trauma and Emergency and Outpatient Department at Stellenbosch Hospital, serving the Cape Winelands Health District. The role is structured at Grade 1 or Grade 2 level and is appointment-based within the public health sector, demanding a high level of clinical skill and leadership. As a specialist nurse, you will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality patient care by identifying nursing needs and implementing comprehensive care plans for patients presenting with trauma and emergency conditions. Applicants must hold a basic nursing qualification (a diploma or degree in nursing) that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification accredited by the SANC is required, specifically in Medical and Surgical Nursing Science: Critical Care Nursing (General) or Emergency Nursing, with a minimum duration of one year. An alternative route is a four-year bachelor's degree in nursing combined with a postgraduate diploma in Critical Care Nursing (Adult) or Emergency Nursing. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is required. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of experience is needed, of which at least ten years must have been gained after obtaining the relevant specialist post-basic qualification.

The core duties include rendering and supervising specialised clinical nursing care, supporting clinical staff during medical and surgical procedures, and ensuring the effective and efficient use of human, material, and physical resources. The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain professional growth and ethical standards, promote the development of self and others, and uphold the core values of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness. A key inherent requirement is the willingness to work shifts, including day and night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the capacity to deputise for the Operational Manager of the Emergency Centre when needed.
