This position is for a Professional Nurse specialising in neonatal intensive care, high care, postnatal Kangaroo Mother Care and the care of neonates, based at George Regional Hospital under the Rural Health Services directorate. The successful candidate will join the neonatology department and be responsible for delivering specialised nursing care to some of the most vulnerable patients, including premature and ill newborns who require intensive or high-care observation, as well as supporting mothers and families through postnatal care and Kangaroo Mother Care. The role is graded at Professional Nurse Level 1 to 2, meaning appointment may be made at either level depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications.

Applicants must hold a basic nursing qualification, either a diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, they must have completed a post-basic nursing qualification of at least one year, accredited by the SANC, in Medical and Surgical Nursing Science with a focus on Critical Care Nursing: Child. Alternatively, a four-year bachelor's degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification, combined with a post-graduate diploma in Critical Care Nursing: Child, will also be accepted. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is required. For Grade 2, at least fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience is required, of which ten years must have been gained after obtaining the relevant specialty qualification in critical care nursing for children.

The duties of the post include providing holistic, quality health care and education that is tailored to the individual needs of patients, their families and the wider community. The nurse will be expected to utilise human and physical resources effectively, support the Nurse Manager with staff supervisory functions, and maintain high professional and ethical standards while encouraging self-development in themselves and others. The role also requires a thorough knowledge of relevant legislation and policies of the Western Cape Department of Health, as well as leadership abilities that contribute to the strategic goals and objectives of the neonatology department. An inherent requirement of the job is a willingness to work shifts, including day and night duty, weekends and public holidays, in order to meet operational needs.

Candidates should note that they will be subjected to a practical assessment as part of the selection process. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Those who do not yet have the stipulated registration with the relevant council may still apply, but they will only be considered for appointment if they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to candidates who are applying for the first time for registration in the relevant post-basic or post-graduate specialty qualification.
