PROFESSIONAL NURSE GRADE 1 TO 2 (GENERAL: CHRONIC WARD) Cape Winelands District

This position is for a Professional Nurse specialising in general nursing within a chronic ward at the ID Hospital in Malmesbury, which forms part of the West Coast TB Centre under the Cape Winelands District of the Western Cape Department of Health. The role offers the opportunity to work in a specialised hospital setting, delivering ongoing care to patients with chronic conditions, including those associated with tuberculosis. Depending on the candidate’s level of experience, appointment can be made at one of three recognised nursing grades, with an OSD-graded salary structure applying. The post demands a strong commitment to public healthcare service and the ability to operate effectively within a multidisciplinary hospital environment.

To be considered, applicants must hold a basic nursing qualification recognised by the South African Nursing Council, such as the R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification under R683. Alternatively, a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing under R174 or a three-year diploma in nursing under R171 that permits registration as a general nurse will also be accepted. Proof of registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse is essential. For appointment at the entry grade, no prior nursing experience is required, making this an accessible opportunity for newly qualified professionals. Candidates seeking a higher grade must have at least ten or twenty years of appropriate post-registration nursing experience in general nursing, for the second and third grades respectively. Those who are not yet registered with the SANC may still apply, provided they meet the concession criteria, which requires submitting proof of a first-time registration application and fee payment before the interview date.

The role requires a nurse who is clinically competent, compassionate, and able to provide holistic, patient-centred care within a clearly defined professional and legal framework.
