This position offers a professional engineering career opportunity within a provincial government department, based at the Head Office in Cedara. The successful candidate will be appointed as a Professional Engineer at Grade A, B, or C, depending on experience and qualifications, and will work within an Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) remuneration structure. The role is central to the department’s infrastructure delivery mandate, focusing on agricultural and civil engineering services that support rural development, land care, and sustainable resource management.
To be considered, applicants must hold a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in either Agricultural Engineering or Civil Engineering, and must be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as the role requires site visits and project inspections. In addition, candidates need at least three years of post-qualification experience in the relevant engineering discipline. The department seeks individuals with a strong working knowledge of programme and project management, engineering design and analysis, research and development, computer-aided engineering applications, legal compliance, and technical report writing. Familiarity with occupational health and safety standards, the Labour Relations Act, the Public Service Act and Regulations, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and departmental HRM and HRD policies is also required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound professional judgement, networking ability, and a commitment to creating a high-performance culture.
The core duties involve developing and designing engineering infrastructure plans, which includes conducting feasibility studies, preparing designs, and ensuring that projects align with departmental objectives and engineering codes of practice. The engineer will also conduct project inspections and provide regular progress reports to stakeholders, ensuring that work is completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Research and development form a significant part of the role, with the expectation that the incumbent will contribute to innovative engineering solutions and stay abreast of emerging technologies and methodologies. The position also requires promoting skills and knowledge transfer within the team, mentoring junior staff, and fostering adherence to sound engineering principles and professional ethics. Administrative responsibilities, including budget monitoring, procurement support, and record-keeping, are an integral part of the job.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to evaluate technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment to test ethical conduct. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). It is important to note that only shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified copies of qualifications and supporting documents, and these must be produced on or before the interview date. The department encourages applicants to use the online application system, while manual applications must be submitted on the prescribed Z83 form, fully completed and signed. If no response is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This role is ideal for a dedicated professional engineer seeking to make a meaningful impact in public infrastructure and agricultural development.
