This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Principal Provincial Inspector within the Law Enforcement Operations directorate of the Western Cape Mobility Department. The role is a supervisory and operational management post, available at various locations across the Western Cape, and is graded at salary level 08. It sits at the heart of the province’s efforts to ensure road safety, enforce transport legislation, and uphold the rule of law on public roads. The successful candidate will be expected to lead teams, manage complex enforcement operations, and work collaboratively with other government bodies and stakeholders to deliver integrated law enforcement outcomes.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent or higher qualification, together with a Basic Traffic Diploma. A minimum of six years of relevant experience in the field is required, as is a valid Code A and Code EC driving licence. Importantly, the department notes that people with disabilities that restrict driving abilities but who have reasonable access to transport may also apply. A clean criminal record is essential. The role demands a thorough working knowledge of key legislation, including the National Road Traffic Act, the National Road Traffic Amendment Act, the Firearms Control Act, the Criminal Procedure Act, and the associated regulations. Familiarity with dimensional and mass limitations for abnormal loads, impoundment procedures, dangerous goods storage and transportation, and guidelines from the Director of Public Prosecutions is also necessary. Candidates must be able to manage traffic law enforcement equipment, conduct driver and vehicle fitness inspections, and complete all required enforcement documentation.

The core duties involve managing and enforcing road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation, as well as other relevant laws. This includes planning and coordinating joint law enforcement activities and projects under cooperative governance arrangements. The role carries significant managerial responsibility: the incumbent must manage resources, provide leadership and direction to subordinates, identify and manage risks, and oversee all administrative activities. Supervisory functions are central, as is the ability to manage performance, maintain records, and ensure service delivery. Strong skills in communication, project management, legal administration, conflict resolution, and negotiation are expected, along with the capacity to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, travel regularly, and work irregular hours when required.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews and must submit duly completed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. Two pre-entry assessments will be conducted: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. By applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for an experienced traffic law enforcement professional seeking to make a meaningful impact on public safety in the Western Cape.
