PRINCIPAL PROVINCIAL INSPECTOR

This position is for a Principal Provincial Inspector within the Traffic Management directorate, based at the Springs Region. This is a senior operational and supervisory role within the provincial traffic policing environment, tasked with enforcing road traffic, public passenger transport and related legislation while providing leadership and direction to subordinate inspectors. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the free flow of traffic through point duty and control at congested areas, safeguarding accident scenes, planning and managing speed testing operations, and coordinating arrests on traffic-related matters while attending court proceedings to give evidence. The role also involves managing traffic policing projects, identifying hazardous locations, escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, monitoring road sports and social events, and coordinating overload control for both goods and passengers, as well as managing joint law enforcement activities under co-operative governance.

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate or higher qualification, a Basic Traffic Diploma, and between six and ten years of relevant working experience in the field. Valid driving licences for code A and EC vehicles are required, and candidates must have no criminal record. The role demands extensive knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, law enforcement knowledge in traffic and public transport vehicle inspections, and vehicle impoundment procedures. Skills in records management, resource management, customer relationship management, planning, organising, leading, controlling, monitoring, people management, communication, decision-making, problem solving, report writing, labour relations, driving, investigation, motivational skills, innovation, analytical thinking, computer literacy and operations or project management are all essential.

Key duties include developing operational strategies and ensuring implementation of approved traffic law enforcement strategies, managing the issuance of relevant notices to offenders, and evaluating and reporting on joint enforcement projects. The incumbent will manage resources, develop monitoring systems to balance production statistics between Senior Provincial Inspectors and Provincial Inspectors, conduct field visits, and implement innovations to improve the working environment. They will perform basic management functions, conduct planning and feedback meetings, assist with human resource issues, coordinate quarterly performance appraisals, and identify and manage risks. Administrative oversight includes managing the motor vehicle fleet, monitoring equipment, implementing loss control measures for firearms and related equipment, participating in budget planning, monitoring monthly expenditure, and sharing budget priority information during management meetings.
