This position is for a Professional Nurse Grade 1 in General Nursing, placed within the Provincial Secretariat directorate and based in Braamfontein. It is an OSD-graded nursing role that calls for a dedicated and competent individual to deliver comprehensive primary health care services. The nurse will be expected to work within the public health framework, applying clinical expertise, upholding professional standards, and contributing to the overall functioning of the health care unit. The role is central to ensuring that patients receive safe, ethical, and effective nursing care in line with the regulatory environment governing the profession in South Africa.
Candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate along with a relevant basic R425 qualification, specifically a Diploma or Degree in Nursing at NQF level 7, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Current registration with the SANC is mandatory, and where applicable, completion of community service is required. Applicants must have no criminal record or pending cases against them. The role demands solid knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, as well as the legal frameworks that govern health care delivery, including the Nursing Act, Health Care Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patient Rights Charter, Batho-Pele principles, Public Service Regulations, Labour Relations Act, and related disciplinary and grievance procedures. In addition, strong communication, report writing, facilitation, co-ordination, liaison, networking, problem-solving, planning, organising, information management, and computer literacy skills are essential.
The main duties of this role are varied and centre on the implementation and supervision of the nursing plan. The incumbent will administer treatment plans for common or minor primary health conditions, screen health problems and diseases according to prescribed norms, and maintain a therapeutic environment that supports optimal and safe health care. A key responsibility is to create and maintain accurate nursing records for each health care user, audit clinical records through data analysis, and report on continuity of care to caregivers and the wider health team. The nurse will also participate in health promotion and illness prevention initiatives, demonstrate an understanding of traditional healing practices within patients’ belief systems, and contribute to the evaluation of these initiatives.
Quality improvement is another critical area. The nurse must help implement quality improvement plans, participate in auditing nursing and health care quality, and assist in developing standards through research. Creating learning opportunities for students and fostering professional growth within the team is also expected. The role involves performing interventions, developing and documenting patient progress, identifying health indicators and risk factors, and conducting client satisfaction surveys. The professional must practice in accordance with all relevant laws and regulations, protect and advocate for patient rights, and ensure compliance with standards, policies, and procedures. Maintaining constructive relationships with nursing and other stakeholders, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, and disseminating information on epidemics, nutritional diseases, and maternal and infant morbidity are also central to the position. Applicants should note that the application process requires the fully completed new Z83 form, signed and accompanied by a comprehensive CV, with shortlisted candidates later required to provide further documentation.
