This vacancy is for a Physiotherapy Technician post based at the Umgeni Specialized Psychiatric Hospital in Howick, within the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health. The role is centred on supporting the hospital’s physiotherapy service for Mental Health Care Users, with a strong focus on patients who have intellectual disabilities together with associated physical disabilities and behavioural challenges. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of registered physiotherapists, delivering a limited but essential physiotherapy service within the defined scope of practice for a Physiotherapy Technician in a specialised psychiatric setting.

To be considered, applicants need a Standard 8 (Grade 10) certificate, combined with a Physiotherapy Assistant diploma that has been upgraded to a Physiotherapy Technician qualification, or a two-year Physiotherapy Technician diploma. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Physiotherapy Technician is mandatory. The role demands sound knowledge of physiotherapy policies, HPCSA guidelines and the Code of Conduct, as well as clinical theory, therapeutic procedures and the safe use of therapeutic equipment. Familiarity with intellectual disability and related physical conditions is crucial, along with good clinical skills, communication abilities, time management and problem-solving capacity. The ability to work under pressure, function with limited resources, and interact compassionately with patients who may display behavioural issues is essential. The post also requires a person who can plan and organise with minimal guidance, is open to learning and correction, and can maintain professional relationships with both clients and colleagues.

The main duties include conducting basic assessments and carrying out treatments in consultation with a registered physiotherapist, providing feedback on patient progress, and educating patients on the correct use of assistive devices. The technician will assist physiotherapists during treatment sessions and help prepare treatment areas. Responsibility for monitoring physical resources is also part of the role, including monthly stock takes and maintaining an organised stockroom. Administrative functions directed by a supervisor, such as daily capturing of own caseload statistics and timely submission to supervisors, are required, as is compiling reports. The technician will assist with relevant clinics, participate in health promotion and education initiatives both at the institution and in the community, and contribute to quality improvement activities including audits and the implementation of quality improvement plans. Attendance at monthly departmental meetings and serving as a physiotherapy representative on relevant committees are also expected. To maintain registration, the incumbent must attend training to accumulate the continuing education units required by the HPCSA.

Other important information for prospective applicants includes that the post is subject to security vetting through the National Intelligence Agency, covering security clearance, credit records, qualification verification, citizenship and employment history. Shortlisted candidates will be expected to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise assessing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The position is advertised with benefits including a 13th cheque and optional medical aid and housing allowances, subject to prescribed requirements. The hospital is an equal opportunity employer, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted due to the high volume of applications. Interviews will not attract travel or subsistence claims. This is a valuable opportunity for a qualified physiotherapy technician seeking to make a meaningful difference in a specialised psychiatric hospital environment, working with a vulnerable patient group in a supportive therapeutic team.
