This position is for a Pharmacy Assistant at the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, within the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport. The successful candidates will support the delivery of pharmaceutical services to patients, working under the supervision of pharmacists. The role is a post-basic pharmacy assistant post, requiring registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post Basic) for the 2026/2027 period. The department is filling three posts, and the level at which the successful candidate is appointed will depend on their years of appropriate experience after registration. A candidate with no post-registration experience will enter at Grade 1, while those with at least five years of relevant experience will be considered for Grade 2, and those with thirteen or more years will be eligible for Grade 3.
The core duties involve assisting with the daily operation of the pharmacy. This includes receiving and unpacking stock, checking stock levels, identifying expired stock, and maintaining pharmacy hygiene. The assistant will also help with ordering medicines and scheduled substances under supervision, distribute pharmacy stock across Schedule 0 to 6, and perform pre-packing or re-packing of medicines. Importantly, the role includes providing instructions to patients on the correct use of supplied medicine, though this is distinct from formal counselling. Additional pharmacy-related tasks include maintaining statistics, records, registers, and stock cards, as well as answering phones and supporting customer care.
Applicants must possess a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification that permits registration with the SAPC, and they must hold current registration for the 2026/2027 year. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and policies, as well as information management and quality assurance programmes. Strong communication and problem-solving skills, computer literacy, stress tolerance, objectivity, and empathy are essential. Familiarity with standard operating procedures, healthcare standards, and treatment guidelines is also required, along with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
The department has a strict application and selection process. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form, accompanied by a comprehensive CV with contactable referees. Shortlisted candidates will need to provide certified copies of qualifications and other documents before the interview, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Dual citizens and non-SA citizens have additional requirements. Successful candidates will undergo personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, financial, qualification, citizenship, reference, and employment verification. They will also be required to enter into an employment contract and performance agreement within three months of appointment, undergo a security clearance, and complete pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The department reserves the right not to fill the posts, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
