PHARMACIST GRADE1, 2 & 3 (X1 POST)

This position is for a qualified pharmacist to join the pharmaceutical services team at Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital, a public sector healthcare facility. The vacancy is open at three professional grades, allowing appointments based on the candidate’s level of post-registration experience. The role is central to ensuring that patients, wards and clinics receive safe, effective and cost-efficient pharmaceutical care in line with South African legislation and good pharmacy practice. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary hospital environment and will be expected to contribute to both the clinical and operational functions of the pharmacy department.

Applicants must hold a Senior Certificate or Grade 12, together with a National Diploma or Degree in Pharmacy, and must be currently registered with the South African Pharmacy Council as a pharmacist. For Grade 1, at least one year of relevant experience after registration is required, with an alternative pathway for foreign-qualified pharmacists who are exempt from community service. Grade 2 requires five years of relevant experience after registration with the SAPC, or six years for foreign-qualified applicants under the same exemption. Grade 3 demands thirteen years of relevant experience after SAPC registration, or fourteen years for foreign-qualified pharmacists who were not required to perform community service in South Africa. In addition to the professional qualifications, candidates must possess computer literacy, an unendorsed valid Code B driver’s licence, sound knowledge of pharmacy legislation, and strong skills in team building, conflict management, communication, planning and organising. Knowledge of human resource management and staff relations legislation is also required, along with a willingness to tutor and mentor pharmacist’s assistants and interns.

The core duties of the role include maintaining accurate and legally compliant records, dispensing prescriptions, and providing pharmaceutical services to wards and departments. The pharmacist will participate in key committees such as the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Antibiotic Stewardship and Pharmacovigilance, and will engage with other departments and service providers to maintain high service quality. Responsibilities also extend to the proper use and care of resources, performing standby and overtime duties after hours, and working staggered shifts to improve patient access to medicines. The incumbent is expected to plan and administer work procedures, recommend policy or strategy improvements, assist with staff training, and act as a tutor for students and interns. Additional duties involve implementing, monitoring and evaluating the EPMDS for pharmacist assistants, maintaining stock levels, ensuring medicine availability, and applying standard procedures and good pharmacy practice in procurement, storage and dispensing. The pharmacist must also compile and analyse medicine availability reports and take corrective action to prevent stock-outs.
