This position offers three entry-level pharmacist roles within the Limpopo Department of Health, with one post based at Groblersdal Hospital and two posts at Pietersburg Hospital. As a Pharmacist Grade 1, you will be joining a provincial hospital environment as a newly or recently registered professional, and the post is structured for individuals with less than five years of experience after registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC). The role is an OSD-graded position that forms part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, and it carries a rural allowance as part of the overall package, reflecting the location of the hospitals.

To be considered, you need a National Senior Certificate or equivalent, together with a basic pharmacy qualification that is accredited by the SAPC and that allows you to register as a pharmacist. Current registration with the SAPC is essential. The post is specifically aimed at pharmacists who have less than five years of post-registration experience. You must also be willing to work shifts and flexible hours, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, and you must be ready to work extra hours on short notice and perform overtime when required. Computer literacy is important, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required, although applicants with disabilities are exempt from this requirement. A sound knowledge of the Pharmacy Act and regulations, the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act, Good Pharmacy Practice, the Public Finance Management Act and the Labour Relations Act is also expected.

In terms of duties, you will be responsible for ensuring the availability of medicines and medical supplies, including providing alternative treatment options and giving continuous feedback to healthcare professionals about medicine availability. You will provide support to clinics and conduct ward rounds as part of your clinical responsibilities. You will manage pharmaceutical services with a strong focus on promoting rational medicine use, pharmacovigilance and antimicrobial stewardship, working through the local Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committees. Stock management is a key part of the role, covering stock at all levels, reporting on stock systems, and working to eliminate pharmaceutical waste. You will also ensure compliance with the hospital formulary and update the code list whenever changes are made to the Standard Treatment Guidelines.

Shortlisted candidates should be prepared to attend an interview and to submit certified copies of qualifications and registration certificates. The selection process may include practical and integrity assessments. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a pharmacist who is committed to public healthcare and patient safety.
