This position is for a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant within the Metro Health Services directorate, based at two separate facilities in the Mitchells Plain area: one post at Mitchells Plain Community Health Centre and one at Mitchells Plain District Hospital. The role forms part of the public health pharmacy team, supporting pharmacists in the delivery of pharmaceutical services to patients in a primary and district hospital setting. The post is graded at levels 1 to 3, with the specific grade determined by the candidate’s years of appropriate experience after registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
To be considered, applicants must hold a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification that permits registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) or as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) (Institutional). Registration with the SAPC is a core requirement. For appointment at Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years’ appropriate experience as a Pharmacist Assistant after registration, while Grade 3 requires at least thirteen years of such experience. Candidates who do not yet have the stipulated registration may still apply, but they will only be considered if they provide proof of application for registration with the SAPC and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status.
The duties of the role are varied and performed under the supervision of a pharmacist. The incumbent will be responsible for dispensing and capturing prescriptions, receiving stock from suppliers and capturing it into the system, managing stock control, ordering and issuing stock, and manufacturing mixtures under pharmacist supervision. The position also involves providing patients with clear instructions on the correct use of medicines, offering information to promote health and wellness, and supporting the pharmacist with administrative tasks. This is a patient-facing role that requires accuracy, good communication skills, and a solid understanding of pharmaceutical procedures and stock management.
Candidates will be subjected to a written, practical, and oral assessment as part of the selection process. There is no payment of any kind required when applying for this post. The positions are based in Mitchells Plain, and any enquiries can be directed to the contact person listed in the vacancy notice. This is an opportunity for qualified pharmacist assistants to contribute to public healthcare service delivery within the Western Cape Government’s Metro Health Services.
