This position offers a meaningful opportunity for a qualified post-basic pharmacist assistant to contribute to public healthcare within the Western Cape’s Metro Health Services. Based at the Klipfontein/Mitchells Plain Sub-structure office, the successful candidate will join a team that supports pharmaceutical service delivery across primary health care facilities and private provider networks in that region. There are two posts available, both graded at the Pharmacist Assistant (Post Basic) level, and the role is well suited to professionals who are customer-focused, operationally minded, and able to work flexibly across different settings.

To be considered, applicants must hold the post-basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification recognised by the training facility and the South African Pharmacy Council, and must be able to register with the SAPC as either a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) Institutional or a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic). Registration with the SAPC is a core requirement. A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the job, as the work involves travelling and liaising with various facilities and providers. The appointment level depends on relevant experience after registration with the SAPC: Grade 1 requires no prior experience; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years of appropriate experience; and Grade 3 requires at least thirteen years of appropriate experience. Candidates who do not yet hold the specified registration may nonetheless apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees to the SAPC on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status.

The core duties centre on supporting the Manager: Pharmaceutical Services in managing and coordinating private providers within the Klipfontein/Mitchells Plain Sub-structure. The incumbent will engage and liaise with both internal and external stakeholders, assist private providers with stock-related and other operational pharmacy queries, and provide post-basic pharmacist assistant services at primary health care facilities on a rotational basis. This means the role combines administrative coordination responsibilities with hands-on pharmaceutical service delivery, requiring strong communication, organisational, and clinical skills. Candidates should also note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Appointments are subject to a written, practical, and oral assessment, and the selection process may consider equity objectives within the public service. This is a demanding but rewarding post for a registered professional looking to broaden their experience in primary health care and community-based pharmaceutical services.
