This vacancy offers an opportunity for a detail-oriented and professional individual to serve as the Personal Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer within the Limpopo Department of Health, based at the Provincial Office in Polokwane. The role is central to the smooth operation of the CFO’s office, providing high-level secretarial and administrative support to the manager and the broader branch. As the first point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, the incumbent will be expected to communicate with ministries, senior management, officials and the public in a courteous and professional manner, while also exercising sound judgement, integrity and confidentiality in handling sensitive documents and information.
To be considered, applicants must possess a National Senior Certificate or Matric, along with an NQF level 6 qualification in Office Administration, Management Assistant, Secretarial studies or an equivalent field, as recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority. This should be accompanied by one to two years of relevant experience in office management. Computer literacy is essential, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities, and the successful applicant must be willing to work extra hours on short notice when the need arises.
The job demands a sound understanding of public service prescripts, procedures and the legislative framework governing operational supervision and work allocation. The Personal Assistant will be responsible for providing a full secretarial support service, performing administrative duties, and rendering support to the branch. This includes organising and supporting meetings for the manager, administering the manager’s budget, and ensuring that all financial and numerical reporting is accurate. The role also involves planning, organising and verifying information, ensuring compliance and governance, managing records and information, and applying problem-solving and interpersonal skills to resolve conflicts, including interacting with difficult individuals in a tactful manner. Strong people management and discipline, communication skills, and a service-orientated attitude are essential personal attributes, along with loyalty, objectivity, responsibility and a highly developed sense of honesty.
Candidates should note that this position is subject to the department’s recruitment conditions. Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals, and all shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview and submit certified copies of their qualifications, identity document and any relevant registrations. Shortlisted applicants may also be expected to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, which will be scored as part of the interview process. Applicants with foreign qualifications are responsible for having these evaluated by SAQA and providing proof of such evaluation. It is important to complete all application requirements carefully, as incomplete submissions may lead to disqualification. The Department of Health is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent recruitment process, and this challenging but rewarding position is ideal for an organised, proactive administrative professional who thrives in a high-pressure environment and is dedicated to supporting executive-level financial management in the public service.
