The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is advertising paramedic vacancies within its Emergency Medical Services unit on the West Coast, under the Emergency and Clinical Support Services directorate. These positions are structured across four grades, allowing candidates with different levels of qualification and experience to apply. The core purpose of the role is to provide clinical leadership, ensure high-quality emergency care, and drive continuous improvement across all prehospital service platforms. The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the way emergency care is delivered from the roadside to the bedside, with a strong emphasis on patient safety, clinical governance, and professional development.
The entry requirements vary by grade. For Grade 1, applicants must have completed the Critical Care Assistant (CCA) programme and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Paramedic. Grade 2 requires either the CCA programme or a recognised National Diploma that allows HPCSA registration as a Paramedic. Grades 3 and 4 accept the CCA programme, a recognised National Diploma, or a B Tech degree that permits registration as an Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP). Experience requirements are also grade-specific: Grade 1 requires no post-registration experience, while Grade 2 demands seven years for CCA-qualified paramedics but none for those with a National Diploma. Grade 3 requires fourteen years for CCA holders, seven years for National Diploma holders, and none for ECPs. Grade 4 is the most senior level, requiring twenty-four years for CCA holders, seventeen years for National Diploma holders, and ten years for ECPs. All applicants must be registered with the HPCSA in the relevant category.
The job demands physical and mental fitness, a valid code C1 driver’s licence, and a valid professional driver’s permit (PrDP). Candidates should possess excellent knowledge of emergency care protocols within their scope of registration, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy. The duties are broad and strategic. The paramedic will lead the development and implementation of quality improvement frameworks, establish clinical governance structures such as incident reporting and adverse event management, and monitor clinical performance against response timeframes and quality benchmarks. The role also involves collecting and analysing patient feedback, complaints, and clinical outcomes to drive service improvements. The incumbent will provide mentorship to prehospital providers, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop evidence-based protocols, and design continuous professional development programmes. Additional responsibilities include establishing clinical oversight mechanisms, coordinating cross-functional quality improvement projects, managing data-driven performance monitoring systems, leading root cause analyses for clinical incidents, and developing corrective action plans. The paramedic will also ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, represent the organisation in clinical governance forums, and prepare clinical performance reports for senior leadership.
A notable special condition applies to candidates who do not yet have the required HPCSA registration. They may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees to the relevant council on or before the day of the interview. This concession is only available to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status. As with all public service posts, no payment of any kind is required when applying. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced paramedics and emergency care practitioners seeking a senior clinical role in a dynamic emergency medical service environment.
