Operator (Pneumatic Tube Station) (Permanent position)

This permanent position is based at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory and centres on the efficient running of the hospital’s pneumatic tube station. The operator is responsible for the day-to-day operational function of the Pneumatic Tube System, which is the network used to move specimens, documents and other items between wards and laboratories. This is a hands-on role within a busy tertiary hospital environment, requiring someone who can manage the dispatch and collection of carriers, handle telephonic queries and requests, and ensure that the system operates smoothly throughout their shift. The role also involves reporting defective specimens, transporting specimens from various wards to the relevant laboratories, and managing the receipt and dispatch of specimens, postal forms, medical reports and other related documents. In addition, the operator must help maintain a safe and hygienic work environment by applying basic infection prevention and control measures, as well as collecting and cleaning equipment. Other duties include assisting with the collection of DHA1663 forms from wards, performing messenger duties, and assisting the undertaker with queries, making this a varied and physically active position.

Candidates must hold a General Education and Training certificate (GETC) or Grade 9 (Std 7) as the minimum educational qualification. Appropriate operator experience is required, and applicants should have extensive knowledge of the tube distribution service, the ability to communicate effectively, and a basic understanding of infection prevention and control procedures. A willingness to work under pressure is essential, as is the ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting carriers. The job also requires the incumbent to render shift duty, so flexibility around working hours is necessary.
