This position is for an Operational Manager Nursing with a specialty in Nephrology, based within the Haemodialysis Unit at Grey's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Haemodialysis Unit, ensuring that high-quality renal nursing care is delivered to all patients accessing these services. As a senior nursing manager, the role requires providing strategic leadership within the unit, managing resources effectively, and fostering a therapeutic environment for both staff and patients. The position operates within the broader Nursing Department at Grey's Hospital, a major tertiary facility, and the incumbent will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to maintain service excellence and compliance with national healthcare standards.
Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate, a degree or diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse, and a one-year post-basic or postgraduate qualification in Nephrology Nursing Science. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council is required, evidenced by the 2026 SANC receipt. The experience requirement is substantial: candidates need a minimum of nine years of appropriate nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing, of which at least five years must be recognisable experience gained after obtaining the Nephrology qualification. Alternatively, candidates with fourteen years of appropriate experience after registration, including ten years post-Nephrology qualification, may also apply. This ensures that the successful candidate has deep clinical and managerial expertise in the renal nursing field.
The role demands comprehensive knowledge of nursing care processes, relevant legislation including the Nursing Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patients' Rights Charter, Batho Pele principles, Public Service Regulations, Labour Relations Act, and disciplinary and grievance procedures. Financial and budgetary acumen is essential for managing unit resources, alongside strong leadership, organisational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Interpersonal abilities, including public relations, negotiation, conflict handling, and counselling, are critical, as is basic computer literacy.
Key duties include planning, organising, and monitoring the objectives of the Haemodialysis Unit, managing a therapeutic environment, ensuring effective communication with patients, families, and stakeholders, and supervising all resources with a focus on cost containment. The manager will also coordinate training and research initiatives aimed at improving nephrology nursing care, instil discipline and professionalism among staff, and develop strategies to ensure compliance with quality care and infection prevention and control programmes such as the Ideal Hospital Realisation and Maintenance framework. Additionally, the role involves providing relief support to nursing management when required.
This is an OSD-graded nursing position with a competitive remuneration package. The employment equity target for this post is African Male, Coloured Male, African Female, and Coloured Female. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and will need to submit certified copies of qualifications and service certificates endorsed by Human Resources at that stage.
