This is a senior nursing management position based at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley, within the Obstetrics Services department, specifically dedicated to the Antenatal High-Risk Clinic. The Operational Manager Nursing is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and specialised care to expectant mothers with high-risk pregnancies. This role sits within the broader public health framework of the Western Cape, and the post is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation for nursing professionals.
Candidates must be registered with the South African Nursing Council as Professional Nurses. The educational requirements can be met in two ways: either holding a basic R425 nursing diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification, supplemented by a one-year post-basic qualification accredited by the SANC in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science; or holding a four-year Bachelor of Nursing degree (R174 or equivalent) alongside a post-graduate diploma in Midwifery (R635). A minimum of nine years of appropriate experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse is required, with at least five of those years in the obstetrics specialty after obtaining the relevant post-basic qualification. The position also demands the ability and willingness to work shifts and after-hours cover, including weekends, public holidays, night duty relief, and overtime.
Key competencies include basic computer literacy, independent decision-making, and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, and organisational skills are essential, as is the ability to function under pressure. The successful candidate will need thorough knowledge of public sector legislation and policy relevant to this nursing specialty, and a commitment to promoting quality patient care through setting, implementing, and monitoring standards.
The main duties involve planning, managing, and coordinating an optimal specialised nursing service. This includes participative management of human and financial resources to ensure the clinic runs effectively. The Operational Manager will also initiate and participate in training, development, and research within the nursing department, deliver a support service to the wider nursing service and institution, and maintain ethical standards while promoting professional growth and self-development.
No payment is required when applying for this post. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a practical or competency assessment as part of the selection process. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced midwifery nursing professional seeking a leadership role in a high-risk antenatal setting at one of the country's major tertiary hospitals.
