This position offers an opportunity to serve as the Office Manager for Research and Technology Development Services within the Western Cape Government’s Department of Agriculture, based at Elsenburg/Stellenbosch. The role sits at the heart of the Chief Director’s office, providing high-level executive and administrative support to top management while helping to drive the research agenda of the programme. Operating within the broader provincial public service environment, the incumbent will need to understand government priorities, regulatory frameworks, and modern governance systems, and will act as a key liaison between the Chief Director and various national and provincial structures, including ministries, the Office of the Premier, and the Office of the Provincial Standing Committee.

Applicants must hold an appropriate three-year post-school qualification at NQF level 6 or equivalent, coupled with at least three years of experience rendering executive support to top management. A valid driving licence (Code EB or higher) is required, though people with disabilities that restrict driving abilities may still apply if they have reasonable access to transport. The successful candidate will need a broad and practical skill set, including strong computer literacy, numeracy, analytical ability, and financial management acumen. Excellent written and oral communication, presentation skills, interpersonal abilities, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and organisational planning are all essential, as is a working knowledge of information and records management, relevant software packages, and intergovernmental and international relationships. Basic research skills are also important, given the research-focused nature of the unit.

In terms of daily responsibilities, the Office Manager will manage the research project process of the programme, ensuring that projects are supported administratively from initiation through to completion. The role also involves rendering line administrative support services, managing the resources within the Chief Director’s office, and executing research, analysing information, and compiling complex documents. Another key duty is providing support to the Chief Director in relation to meetings, which includes preparation, coordination, and follow-up. The incumbent must stay up to date with all applicable prescripts, policies, and procedures relevant to the work terrain, ensuring that support remains efficient and effective in a fast-paced government environment.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews at a date determined by the department, and must submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. There are also two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to gauge suitability against technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a well-organised, proactive professional seeking to contribute to agricultural research and technology development in the Western Cape public service.
