This permanent vacancy offers three Nursing Assistant posts at New Somerset Hospital, under the Chief Directorate of Metro Health Services, with placement across the Obstetrics, Post Natal and Gynae, and Intensive Care Unit wards. The role forms part of a multi-disciplinary health team and is carried out under the direct supervision of a Professional Nurse, making it a clinically supportive position within a busy hospital environment. Successful candidates will be expected to rotate between wards and departments as needed, and to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, night duty and overtime when required.
To be considered, applicants need an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Nursing Assistant, and they must hold current annual registration with the SANC. Experience requirements are linked to the grade at which appointment is made: Grade 1 requires no prior experience, while Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognizable nursing experience after registration, and Grade 3 requires at least twenty years of such experience. Candidates who do not yet have the stipulated registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees to the relevant council on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status.
The core duties involve assisting and supporting patients with activities of daily living and physical self-care, providing elementary clinical nursing care under the supervision of the Professional Nurse, and offering ongoing health education to patients and their next of kin. The role also requires accurate record keeping, effective utilization of resources, and a commitment to maintaining professional growth and ethical standards. Candidates must be able to function and make decisions both independently and as part of a team, and they should possess good communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of relevant nursing legislation, policies and protocols of the Western Cape Department of Health is essential, as is the ability to work in a high-stress environment.
Remuneration is aligned to the applicable grade, with annual salary packages varying by grade and supplemented by service benefits such as a 13th cheque, employer contributions to a pension fund, and housing and medical aid allowances. This is a permanent position, and interested applicants should direct enquiries to the contact person named in the advertisement. Given the nature of the hospital environment and the specific wards involved, applicants should be prepared for a demanding but rewarding role that requires flexibility, compassion and a strong sense of professional accountability.
