The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape Government is advertising a vacancy for a Museum Assistant at its satellite museum in Tulbagh. This post, graded at Level 05, forms part of the department's broader commitment to extending museum services beyond major urban centres and ensuring that local heritage is preserved, interpreted and made accessible to communities and visitors alike. The successful candidate will work within a small museum environment and contribute to provincial goals of cultural preservation, nation building and tourism development, making the role both practically demanding and socially meaningful.

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF 4, together with at least one year of relevant experience. The role requires a well-rounded knowledge of the history, purpose and functions of museums in society, including their potential for nation building and tourism; museum ethics; current research techniques for the selection, evaluation and exhibition of objects of material culture or the presentation of living history; collections management and preventive conservation; education methodology in museums; project planning and management, including financial management; legislation, policy and regulations relating to the sector; and government service improvement initiatives such as Batho Pele. Candidates must also demonstrate sound numeracy, literacy, computer literacy and language skills, as well as the ability to motivate their own ideas, break problems down into manageable parts, identify solutions, listen receptively to others, manage conflict, and communicate verbally and in writing with ease and confidence.

The duties of the post are varied and hands-on. The Museum Assistant will assist with the administration of the museum and related activities, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. A significant part of the role involves facilitating, presenting and implementing public programmes and maintaining public relations, as well as developing and delivering educational and outreach programmes for schools and community groups. The incumbent will also engage in research and implement exhibitions, and assist with the promotion and marketing of the museum to attract visitors and raise its profile. This combination of administrative, research, educational and promotional responsibilities means the post is well suited to someone who is organised, creative and comfortable working with diverse audiences.

Shortlisted candidates should note that interviews will be scheduled by the department, and they will be required to submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe prior to the interview. Two pre-entry assessments will also be undertaken by all shortlisted candidates: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers for references, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Applications must be submitted online before the closing date, as late submissions will not be accepted, and technical support is available during business hours for those experiencing difficulties with the online application system.
