This position is for a Messenger/Driver within the Nkangala District office of the Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development and Tourism, based in Kwamhlanga. The role is central to the smooth day-to-day running of the district office, providing essential transport and logistical support to officials and ensuring that mail, documents, stationery and other items are moved efficiently between the department, external stakeholders, post offices and courier services. As a messenger and driver, you will be the face of the department when delivering invitations to business groups and other partners, so professionalism, tact and a neat appearance are important. The post is graded at Level 04 and forms part of the department’s broader administrative support structure, working closely with the registry and district logistics teams.
To be considered, applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate and a valid driver’s licence, along with a valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP). A sound knowledge of the local roads and places in and around the Nkangala District is essential, as is familiarity with messenger services, Batho Pele principles, and basic planning and organising. The department is looking for someone with good people skills, a high level of reliability, and the ability to act with tact and discretion when handling sensitive documents or interacting with stakeholders. Basic written communication skills are required, as you will need to complete prescribed records and logbooks. You should also be well-groomed and presentable, capable of operating a photocopier, and able to organise your daily tasks effectively.
The main duties involve driving light and medium motor vehicles to transport passengers and deliver items such as mail, documents and invitations. You will be responsible for routine maintenance of the allocated vehicle and must report any defects timeously. You will collect mail from the post office or courier services, including heavy boxes, and deliver stationery and goods from stores. You will also collect and deliver documentation within the department, copy and fax documents, and assist with registry activities. In addition, you will attend to district logistical support services and provide transport services for district officials as needed.
Shortlisted candidates should note that certified documents will only be required on or before the day of the interview, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA with proof provided if shortlisted. Applicants must disclose any directorship, shareholding or business dealings with an organ of state, as well as any additional remunerative work outside their normal duties. The successful candidate will be subject to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, financial assets, qualifications and employment references, and will be required to enter into an Annual Performance Agreement and disclose financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you have not heard anything within three months after the closing date, you should assume your application was unsuccessful.
