This vacancy is for a Medical Specialist in Endocrinology, offered as a sessional post at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH), a major tertiary referral centre in KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidate will join the Department of Endocrinology within the broader Department of Medicine, providing specialist outpatient services for a wide range of endocrine and metabolic conditions. These include diabetes mellitus, dyslipidaemia, thyroid disorders, pituitary and adrenal conditions, parathyroid disorders, osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases, disorders of sex development, and other endocrine and metabolic diseases. The role involves assessing and managing both new and follow-up patients, and requires the ability to handle medical emergencies common in this field, particularly acute hypoadrenalism, diabetic ketoacidosis, and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemia.
Applicants must hold an MBChB degree and be currently registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Specialist, with the FCP(SA) or equivalent qualification. In addition, a sub-specialist qualification in endocrinology is required. The post demands sound clinical knowledge within the discipline, a thorough understanding of ethical medical practice, and the competence to assess, diagnose and manage patients across both general medicine and endocrinology.
Beyond direct patient care, the duties include substantial teaching and supervision responsibilities. The specialist will provide case-based teaching and supervision to medical officers and registrars attached to the Department of Medicine who rotate through the Endocrinology Department, as well as to sub-specialist trainees in endocrinology. The role also involves inter-departmental consultation with other disciplines at IALCH regarding patient care, collection of departmental statistics, and assistance with clinical audits as directed by the Head of Department or Head of Clinical Unit. The incumbent will participate in bi-annual performance reviews in line with the EPMDS agreements.
The post is subject to several conditions. Shortlisted candidates, including those at SMS level, will be required to undertake two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. The results of these technical exercises will be scored by the selection panel as an additional criterion during the interview process. Applicants must complete the current Z83 application form and submit it with a detailed curriculum vitae; certified copies of qualifications and other documents are only required from shortlisted candidates, who may also need to provide an original signed letter from their current employer confirming relevant work experience. Candidates with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and provide proof before the interview. The selected candidate will undergo pre-employment screening and verification, including a CIPC check. IALCH is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer that aims to promote representivity across all occupational categories. People with disabilities and African males are particularly encouraged to apply, while applicants from all race groups remain welcome. Due to financial constraints, no subsistence and travel claims will be paid, and applications that are not acknowledged within 60 days of the closing date should be regarded as unsuccessful.
