This position offers an opportunity for a qualified radiation oncologist to join the oncology team at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, a major tertiary referral centre in KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidates will work within the broader Ethekweni Oncology complex, which includes Addington Hospital and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, and will also provide outreach services to Ngwelezane and Queen Nandi hospitals as required. The role is central to delivering holistic, multidisciplinary cancer care across the province, and the department is seeking two specialists to fill these posts.

Applicants must hold an MBChB or equivalent qualification and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Specialist in Radiation Oncology, with a current registration card. Those who have completed their registrar training or have passed the FC Rad Onc Part II examinations and are awaiting results are also encouraged to apply, although appointment can only be finalised once specialist registration is available. The position is graded according to experience: entry-level Grade 1 requires no prior specialist experience, Grade 2 requires five years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration, and Grade 3 requires ten years of such experience.

The ideal candidate will have sound clinical knowledge within both medical and radiation oncology, the ability to manage oncological emergencies, and a strong commitment to ethical medical practice. Core competencies include assessing, diagnosing and managing adult patients with solid organ malignancies and selected lymphomas, as well as being competent in the radiotherapy management of paediatric malignancies. The duties are comprehensive: providing holistic care to oncology patients, maintaining accurate medical records including on electronic platforms, participating in hospital quality improvement programmes, and upholding clinical, professional and ethical standards. The role also involves community-orientated and outreach programmes, offering expert advice to health facilities across the province as delegated by the head of department. Teaching is a key responsibility, with participation in postgraduate training, registrar teaching, and departmental academic sessions for part 1 and part 2 registrars and medical officers. The successful applicants will be required to perform after-hours duties, work as part of a multi-disciplinary team when necessary, and participate in clinical governance structures.

This is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and persons with disabilities, as well as African males, are particularly encouraged to apply, while all race groups remain eligible. Shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-employment screening and verification, including a CIPC check, and will be required to complete two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and one integrity assessment. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA before the interview. Applicants should note that only the Z83 form and a detailed CV are required at the application stage, with certified documents and an original employer confirmation letter requested only from shortlisted candidates. There is no payment of subsistence and travel claims, and due to the volume of applications, receipt will not be acknowledged; if no response is received within 60 days of the closing date, the application should be considered unsuccessful.
