This vacancy is for a Medical Specialist in Radiology, graded at levels 1 through 3, based at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley. The post forms part of the Western Cape Government’s health establishment and offers a salary package that can be partially structured according to the individual’s personal needs, with the specific grade determined by the candidate’s years of appropriate experience after registration. The successful candidate will join the radiology department of a major tertiary hospital, providing clinical imaging services and contributing to the broader multi-disciplinary care of patients.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Specialist in Radiology, and must be registered with the HPCSA in that category. For appointment at Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration, while Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Experience gained with a recognised foreign health professional council is also accepted for foreign-qualified employees. A notable concession exists for candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration: they may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration as a Medical Specialist in Radiology, including those who must apply for a change in registration status.

The role demands a valid Code B or EB driver’s licence, along with a willingness and ability to travel. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in a system of remunerated commuted overtime and community outreach. Key competencies include the ability to oversee and report on all radiological studies and procedures, a preferred special interest in musculoskeletal radiology, and the capacity to work with a team of hospital clinicians to optimise patient services. A thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, hospital procedures and policies, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills, are essential.

In terms of duties, the Medical Specialist will provide clinical imaging services and reporting across all imaging modalities, ensuring that quality care standards are maintained throughout the radiology service. The role includes guiding staff, teaching, training and supervising junior colleagues, and ensuring the efficient use of resources by managing assets, consumables and services effectively. This is a senior clinical post that carries both service delivery and educational responsibilities within a busy hospital environment.

Applicants are reminded that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. The advertisement is part of a provincial circular, and full details regarding the closing date, application procedure and enquiries are available on the Western Cape Government health jobs portal. Interested specialists should review the circular carefully and submit their applications online before the stated deadline.
