This position is for a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine, graded at levels 1 through 3, based at George Regional Hospital within the Rural Health Services directorate. The successful candidate will join a team serving the broader Rural East Ecosystem, providing specialist internal medicine care to patients managed by both the hospital and the surrounding district. The role is an OSD-graded post, meaning the package is structured according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation, with a portion of the salary package able to be tailored to the individual's personal needs.
Applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine, and must be registered with the HPCSA in that category. Experience requirements are tiered by grade: Grade 1 requires no post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Those with foreign qualifications may have experience recognised from a recognised foreign Health Professional Council. An inherent requirement of the job is performing commuted overtime and participating in the after-hours call system, as well as holding a valid Code B/EB driver's licence and being willing to travel. Desired competencies include excellent communication and conflict management skills, cost-conscious care provision, strong technology and computer skills, problem-solving ability, leadership and mentoring experience, and a track record in audits, research, and publications. Proven knowledge of public health policies and guidelines is also required to manage resources effectively.
The core duty is to render an efficient, cost-effective, high-quality Internal Medicine service to patients, balancing throughput with quality while always behaving professionally and ethically. The specialist will assist with the effective administration of the Internal Medicine Department and support the Head of Department with specific projects relating to Antibiotic Stewardship, PPTC, Critical Care, and Clinical Governance. The role also involves serving as a role model and clinical mentor to junior doctors and associated clinical staff, assisting with unit training commitments, ensuring the rational use of resources, and participating in audits and Clinical Governance activities. Outreach and Support services to the greater Rural East Ecosystem are part of the role, as is maintaining good relations with patients, nursing staff, colleagues, and referral services at tertiary and district hospital levels. The incumbent must adhere to HR requirements and conduct appropriate clinical audits and research within the department to stay abreast of clinical developments.
