Medical Specialist Grade 1 to 3 (Anaesthesiology) (Permanent position)

This permanent position offers an exciting opportunity for a qualified medical specialist in anaesthesiology to join the team at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley, operating within the Western Cape Department of Health. The role is structured as an Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) medical specialist post, with appointment possible at Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3 level depending on the candidate’s years of relevant experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The successful appointee will be responsible for delivering high-quality perioperative patient care in both operating rooms and critical care units, while also contributing to the academic and research mission of the hospital and its associated university.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology. Candidates who do not yet have this registration may still apply under a concession that applies only to health professionals seeking first-time registration as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology, or those who need to change their registration status, provided proof of application and payment of the prescribed fees are submitted on or before the day of interview. Experience requirements differ by grade: Grade 1 requires no post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA or a recognised foreign health professional council.

The role’s core duties span clinical, educational, and administrative responsibilities. Clinically, the specialist must provide perioperative patient care to the standard expected of a specialist anaesthesiologist, including work in critical care settings. Educationally, the post involves teaching and lecturing anaesthesiology and critical care to undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and peers, as well as evaluating students and peers. The specialist is also expected to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field, contribute to hospital and university administration, and pursue clinically relevant research. This includes facilitating the research component that registrars must complete for HPCSA specialty registration and publishing in peer-reviewed, accredited journals. Evidence of cross-disciplinary teamwork, excellent interpersonal relationships, research project execution, and the ability to supervise registrars preparing for their Fellowship examination in Anaesthesiology are essential competencies.
