MEDICAL REGISTRAR (4 – 5 YEARS CONTRACT)

This is a four-to-five-year contract post for a Medical Registrar within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering qualified medical practitioners the opportunity to train in a chosen specialty while delivering clinical services in a public hospital environment. The role is essentially a registrar training position, combining hands-on patient management with structured academic development, and is suited to doctors who wish to pursue a career as a specialist while contributing to the teaching mission of the department.

Candidates must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner in independent practice, and they must already have current HPCSA registration on the day they assume duty. For those applying in the disciplines of Paediatric Oncology or Paediatric Pulmonology, the requirement is more specific: applicants must hold an appropriate qualification as a Paediatrician Medical Specialist and be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. This reflects the advanced level of care expected in these subspecialties.

The core responsibilities revolve around the care of patients across a range of designated levels and sites, including wards, outpatient departments, emergency units, intensive care, theatre, and outreach sites, as well as any services related to the relevant discipline. The registrar is expected to take independent and effective responsibility for patient management, while also ensuring appropriate recording and monitoring of clinical data. This includes participation in clinical and mortality audits, data analysis, and report writing as relevant to the discipline. Beyond direct patient care, the post carries a mandatory academic component: registrars must participate in departmental academic meetings and teaching programmes, and they are required to teach and supervise undergraduate students, medical officers, and interns, as well as any other academic in-service training as directed by the Head of Department. Provision of after-hours services is also a key part of the role.

The ideal candidate will have appropriate experience and suitability to train in the relevant specialty, with the ability to manage patients independently and effectively. A willingness to learn, innovate, and work overtime is essential, as are good interpersonal skills and a sound understanding of medical ethics. The department places strong emphasis on respect for the Patient's Rights Charter and the Batho Pele principles, so applicants should demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to these frameworks. An interest in conducting research is expected, and computer literacy, including the collection and analysis of data, is required for the audit and reporting components of the job.
