This position offers a unique and demanding opportunity for a qualified medical professional to serve as the Medical Orderly on Marion Island, a remote South African research station in the sub-Antarctic. The role is a contract of approximately fifteen months, based at the island’s base, and involves being the primary healthcare provider for the entire expedition team throughout their stay. Working under the auspices of the South African government’s environmental and weather service programme, the incumbent will be part of a small, self-sufficient community, and must be prepared for the physical and mental challenges of prolonged isolation. The successful candidate will be required to attend compulsory training at the South African Weather Service in Cape Town before deployment, and will spend a full year on the island, with no option to return to South Africa before the designated date. This is not a typical nursing post; it demands resilience, adaptability, and the ability to function effectively under extreme pressure with minimal support.
Applicants must hold a National Diploma in Nursing at NQF Level 6 or a Certificate in Operational Emergency Care Practitioner, and be registered with either the HPCSA or SANC. Between three and five years of relevant experience is required, along with a thorough understanding of nursing care processes, relevant legislation including the Nursing Act, Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patient Rights Charter, and other public service regulations. Strong leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills are essential, as is basic computer literacy. The ability to work independently without supervision, communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, and collaborate effectively within a small team are critical attributes. Candidates must also be physically fit, mentally strong, and prepared for long hours in extreme conditions, often performing duties unrelated to their medical function.
The core duty is to provide medical treatment to all team members during the expedition, strictly adhering to the scope of practice regulations. This includes undertaking minor dental procedures and taking x-rays when necessary. Beyond clinical care, the Medical Orderly is responsible for preparing reports, conducting stock-takes of food and medicines, ordering spares and equipment, and participating in common non-technical tasks shared by all expedition members. Maintaining high standards of food storage, hygiene, housekeeping, linen management, and tailoring duties is also part of the role, in line with medical and health regulations. The position also involves supporting the team leader in coordinating and training for rescue, evacuation, and emergency procedures on the island. Socially, the incumbent is expected to motivate and encourage fellow team members, contributing to the overall morale and cohesion of the group.
Short-listed candidates will undergo screening, security vetting, a rigorous medical examination, and psychometric assessment, all at no cost. The ability to live and work with small groups of people is essential, as the base is equipped with email, fax, and satellite telephone, but the individual must be self-sufficient and self-motivated. This role is ideal for a dedicated healthcare professional seeking a challenging, rewarding, and truly unique experience in one of the world’s most remote environments.
