The Department of Health at Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital is advertising two Medical Officer posts. These are graded positions within the occupation-specific dispensation, meaning the level of appointment depends on the candidate’s years of appropriate experience as a medical practitioner after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The remuneration is offered as an all-inclusive package, structured with a basic salary and a flexible portion, and includes commuted overtime for after-hours work. Medical aid is optional. The successful candidates will join a busy hospital environment, with the primary responsibility for patient care in the emergency department, while also contributing to the broader clinical and academic life of the hospital.

To be considered, applicants must hold a senior certificate and an appropriate tertiary qualification, specifically an MBChB, that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner. Current registration with the HPCSA is essential, and completion of community service is mandatory; community service officers will not be considered. For appointment at Grade 1, no post-community service experience is required beyond registration. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years appropriate experience as a Medical Officer after registration, while Grade 3 requires at least ten years of appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner. An unendorsed valid code B driver’s licence is required. Additional postgraduate courses such as ACLS, BLS, or ATLS would be an added advantage. Candidates should have sound knowledge of clinical governance frameworks, legislated norms and standards, basic medical practice ethics, and the ability to maintain proper medical records and refer patients appropriately.

The duties of the post are wide-ranging. Medical Officers will be responsible for the examination, diagnosis, and total management of patients, including orthopaedic patients, and for the identification and management of emergencies. They will provide initial resuscitative care and ongoing care of patients in the emergency department, participate in 24-hour clinical coverage through commuted overtime, and attend ward rounds. They are expected to participate in academic programmes, clinical audit activities, and quality improvement initiatives. The role also involves contributing to the effective management of complaints and patient safety incidents, ensuring compliance with current legislative and ethical principles, and maintaining sound labour relations in line with relevant legislation while always prioritising patient interests. Medical Officers will provide training and supervision for nurses, junior staff, interns, and medical students, and participate in outreach programmes. The ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team, communicate well, plan, organise, lead, and make decisions is essential, as is resilience and the capacity to cope with change in a busy department.

This department is an equal opportunity, affirmative employer and aims to promote representivity across all occupational categories. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must complete the prescribed employment application form and submit a detailed CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide endorsed proof of previous work experience and other documents. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. Appointment is subject to security clearance, credit record, qualification, citizenship, and employment verification checks. Due to the expected volume of applications, correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and the department reserves the right not to fill the posts.
