The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large intake of 227 Medical Officer posts operating on a shift system across its provincial hospital network. This is an OSD-graded clinical position that requires registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner. Vacancies are available at Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 levels, reflecting different years of relevant experience, and are distributed among numerous hospitals throughout the province, including both larger referral facilities and smaller district hospitals. The role is inherently shift-based, with a focus on providing continuous, after-hours and emergency care in a public health setting.

Applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered with the Council. South African citizenship or permanent residence is a firm requirement. For appointment at Grade 1, less than five years of appropriate experience after registration is required; Grade 2 calls for a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years of post-registration experience. Because the post works on a flexi or shift schedule, candidates must be willing to work night duty, weekends, public holidays and overtime when operational needs demand. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms is essential, and a valid driver’s licence is required, with an exception for people with disabilities. A skill declaration form must accompany the application.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, including the legal aspects relevant to medical practice in South Africa. Sound clinical skills in general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics are needed for all age groups and both sexes at district hospital level, along with good leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills. The role demands the ability to collect and analyse data, uphold sound medical ethics, understand clinical governance, and work independently after hours without supervision. Rational use of limited resources is also a key competency.

Key performance areas include providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas to the standard required for continued registration as a medical practitioner. The Medical Officer will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events and provincial operations. Responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including disaster situations, is a critical responsibility. The postholder must maintain best clinical practice through Continuous Professional Development as required by the HPCSA, generate and maintain accurate clinical records, and participate in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme. Conducting clinical audits, ensuring clinical protocols are followed, and engaging in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels are all expected. Where needed, the incumbent will supervise, instruct and train junior Medical Officers and Registrars in one or more designated clinical areas. Additional duties may be allocated by the supervisor without boundary restrictions across the province.

These posts carry an all-inclusive remuneration package consistent with the Occupation Specific Dispensation, and a rural allowance may be paid for posts located in designated ISRDS nodes. The 227 vacancies are spread across many hospitals, with specific numbers per facility and per grade, so applicants should identify the centre that suits them. This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity for medical professionals who are resilient, adaptable and committed to public healthcare service in a rural and peri-urban context.
