MEDICAL OFFICER: [SHIFTS] = [227] POSTS

This is a large-scale recruitment initiative by the Limpopo Department of Health to fill 227 shift-based Medical Officer posts at hospitals across the province. The successful candidates will form part of a provincial clinical workforce expected to deliver general medical care in district and regional hospitals, ranging from busy referral centres to smaller rural facilities. The role is inherently operational and hands-on, requiring doctors to work flexi and shift systems, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays. As an OSD-graded position, the remuneration package is all-inclusive, with a rural allowance payable to qualifying candidates in certain nodes, and commuted overtime may be approved depending on operational needs.

To qualify, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must be currently registered. Appointment is at one of three grades based on post-registration experience: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years, Grade 2 requires at least five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years of recognised experience. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. The inherent requirements of the post include a willingness to work after hours, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the ability to perform overtime when required. Applicants also need computer literacy across standard Microsoft Office applications and virtual meeting platforms, and must hold a valid driver’s licence, although an exception is made for people with disabilities. A skill declaration form must be submitted with the application.

Professionally, the department expects sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, a clear understanding of the legal aspects governing medical practice in South Africa, and solid clinical skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for patients of all ages and both sexes at district health service level. Leadership and communication skills, presentation and budgeting skills, data collection and analysis, adherence to medical ethics, and a practical understanding of clinical governance are all essential. The ability to work after hours independently and without supervision, together with rational use of resources, is also needed.

The duties of the post are broad and patient-centred. Medical Officers must provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated areas as required for maintaining HPCSA registration. They will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at any location in the province, including special events and operations. They must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters. Maintaining best clinical practice is central, supported by continuous professional development through the CPD system. They are expected to generate and keep clinical records to the required standards, take part in the department’s quality improvement programme, conduct clinical audits, and follow all relevant protocols. The role also involves participating in continuing medical education and academic activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and supervisors may delegate responsibilities for teaching and supervising Medical Officers and Registrars. Finally, they must carry out any other duties assigned by a supervisor without boundary restrictions.
