This is a large-scale recruitment drive for Medical Officers to fill 227 shift-based posts across public hospitals in Limpopo, with positions available at Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 levels. The roles are based at a wide range of hospitals, from regional centres like Pietersburg and Mankweng to district and community hospitals such as Elim, Ellisras, Thabazimbi and many others. Successful candidates will be responsible for delivering comprehensive medical care within the district health services, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and often serving in under-resourced or rural facilities. The post is suited to medical practitioners who are comfortable with flexible working hours, as shift work, night duty, weekend and public holiday work, and overtime are inherent to the operational needs of the department.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience requirements are graded: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of appropriate post-registration experience; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The job also demands a valid driver's licence, except for people with disabilities, as well as computer literacy in MS Office tools and virtual meeting platforms, and the ability to work independently after hours. A skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application. Sound clinical knowledge and skills for all age groups, including general medical, surgical and anaesthetic care at district level, are essential, along with good leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills, and a solid understanding of medical ethics, clinical governance and data analysis.

The core duties include providing emergency and routine clinical care in designated areas, performing ward rounds, conducting outreach programmes, and responding to emergency calls, including during disasters. Medical officers are expected to maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, participate in continuous professional development (CPD), and keep accurate medical records. They must also take part in the department's quality improvement programmes, conduct clinical audits, and ensure clinical protocols are followed. In addition, they may be required to supervise, instruct and train junior doctors and registrars, and to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor, without boundary restrictions. This means the role carries significant responsibility for both patient care and the development of clinical teams.

The remuneration package is all-inclusive and graded, with a rural allowance applicable to certain posts, and commuted overtime is approved based on operational needs. The department is offering a large number of posts, indicating a strong commitment to strengthening medical staffing across Limpopo's hospitals. Applicants should be prepared for a demanding but rewarding role that requires sound clinical knowledge, leadership skills, and a commitment to public healthcare. The closing date and application procedures are as specified in the official vacancy circular, and interested medical practitioners are encouraged to apply for the grade and centre that matches their experience and preference.
