This advertisement invites applications from qualified medical professionals for a large-scale recruitment of Medical Officers to fill 227 shift-based posts within the Limpopo Department of Health. The positions are spread across a broad network of district and regional hospitals in the province, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Kgapane, Mokopane, and many others. The roles are graded at three levels according to the applicant’s years of relevant experience, making this an opportunity for both early-career doctors and seasoned practitioners. Successful appointees will be employed under the Occupation Specific Dispensation remuneration structureainer, with an all-inclusive package and eligibility for a rural allowance in line with applicable collective agreements, including the special allowance for ISRDS nodes.

Applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. For appointment at Grade 1, candidates need less than five years of appropriate experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. The role inherently demands flexibility, as the department operates a shift system that includes night duty, weekends, and public holidays. Overtime may be required and will be approved on an operational needs basis. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms is essential, as is a valid driver’s licence, unless the applicant is a person with a disability. A skill declaration form must also be submitted as part of the application.

The core responsibilities are wide-ranging and patient-centred. Medical Officers will provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, and are expected to maintain the standards required for continued registration as medical practitioners. They must perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events or during disaster management operations. The role requires responding to emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, upholding best clinical practice, and engaging in Continuous Professional Development as mandated by the HPCSA. Officers are also responsible for generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in quality improvement initiatives, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring adherence to clinical protocols. In addition, they may be required to supervise, instruct, and train junior doctors and registrars in specific clinical disciplines. The department emphasises sound leadership, communication, budgeting skills, and the ethical, rational use of resources. Overall, these posts offer a meaningful career opportunity to contribute to public healthcare delivery across Limpopo’s hospital network, with clear grade progression based on experience.
