This is a large-scale recruitment drive for qualified medical practitioners to fill 227 Medical Officer posts within the Limpopo Department of Health, spread across a wide network of district and regional hospitals in the province. The positions are graded according to experience, with Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 posts available, and successful candidates will be placed at one of the many designated hospitals, ranging from larger centres such as Pietersburg and Mankweng to smaller rural facilities. The role is suited to independent medical practitioners who are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and who are willing to serve in a demanding but rewarding public healthcare environment.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered as such. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. A valid driver's licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities, and computer literacy in MS Office applications and virtual meeting platforms is essential. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application.
The key performance areas are broad and clinically demanding. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, conduct ward rounds, and participate in outreach programmes. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, and maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards. This includes engaging in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the HPCSA, generating and maintaining accurate clinical records, and participating in the department's Quality Improvement Programme. The role also involves conducting clinical audits, ensuring compliance with clinical protocols, and taking part in continuing medical education and academic activities. More experienced incumbents may be required to supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars, and to coordinate clinical responsibilities in one or more designated disciplines. All medical officers must be willing to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and to perform commuted overtime as operational needs dictate.
Candidates should possess sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups, along with strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills. A thorough understanding of medical ethics, clinical governance, and the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa is essential, as is the ability to work independently after hours and use resources rationally. This is a public health sector employment opportunity offering an all-inclusive remuneration package with an additional rural allowance for qualifying incumbents. The successful applicant will be expected to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions, reflecting the flexible and responsive nature of the role.
