This advertisement covers 227 medical officer posts at public hospitals across Limpopo province, organised into three experience-based grades with specific hospital allocations. The roles are full-time clinical positions within the provincial Department of Health, and successful candidates will be expected to function as independent medical practitioners under the HPCSA registration framework. The posts are especially suited to professionals who are comfortable with hospital shift work, as the ability and willingness to work flexi hours including night duty, weekends, and public holidays is an inherent requirement. Overtime may be required and will be approved based on operational needs through the department’s flexi or shift system.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must already be registered with the HPCSA in that category. The grading structure recognises professional experience: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of appropriate recognised experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for people with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be submitted. Computer literacy is also essential, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthesia for patients of all ages and sexes at district health services level. This includes strong understanding of South African medical law, clinical governance, medical ethics, data collection and analysis, and rational resource use. Leadership, verbal and written communication, presentation, and budgeting abilities are also expected. Crucially, the role requires the capacity to work after hours independently and without supervision.

Key performance areas include delivering clinical care such as emergency treatment in designated clinical areas, performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes, and providing medical services at special events or operations across the province. Medical officers must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, and maintain best practice standards through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. They are responsible for generating and maintaining accurate clinical records, participating in the department’s quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring that clinical protocols are followed. Depending on the posting, they may also supervise, instruct, and train junior medical officers and registrars, and coordinate clinical responsibilities across one or more disciplines. Additional duties may be allocated by the supervisor, and postings may require work anywhere in the province without boundary restrictions.

The total advertised posts span numerous hospitals, from large centres like Pietersburg, Mankweng, and Tshilidzini to smaller facilities such as Evuxakeni, Hayani, and Witpoort. Grade 1 accounts for 148 posts, Grade 2 for 62, and Grade 3 for 17. The remuneration package is all-inclusive and grade-based, and an additional rural allowance may apply depending on whether the hospital falls under the PSCBC or ISRDS Nodes arrangement. Given the large number of vacancies and distributed locations, this is a significant recruitment drive for medical officers seeking public sector employment in Limpopo’s hospital network.
