This is a substantial recruitment drive for Medical Officers to fill 227 shift-based posts across a wide network of public hospitals in Limpopo Province. The positions are structured within the provincial Department of Health and offer three career grades depending on the amount of post-registration experience an applicant holds. Grade 1 posts are available at dozens of hospitals, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Philadelphia, Kgapane and others, while Grade 2 and Grade 3 posts are spread across a similar range of facilities such as Donald Fraser, Nkhensani, Seshego, Letaba, Elim and Botlokwa hospitals. The role is aimed at independent medical practitioners who can provide comprehensive clinical care within district health services, working as part of hospital teams and across outreach and emergency settings.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that enables registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered as such. Experience requirements are strictly tied to grade: Grade 1 requires less than five years of appropriate and recognisable experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The post inherently demands willingness and ability to work shifts and flexible hours, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, as well as performing overtime when operational needs arise. Commuted overtime is approved by the Accounting Officer on a flexi or shift system. Computer literacy is essential, covering MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required except for people with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be attached with the application.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, including the legal aspects relevant to medical practice in South Africa. Clinical competence is expected in general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics across all age groups and sexes at district hospital level. Strong leadership, verbal and written communication, presentation and budgeting skills are also needed, along with the ability to collect and analyse data, uphold sound medical ethics, and understand and apply clinical governance. The work requires independent after-hours practice without supervision, plus the rational use of resources.
Key performance areas include providing clinical care and emergency care in designated clinical areas, performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes and delivering medical services at special events and operations province-wide. The incumbent must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters. Maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards is crucial, with ongoing professional development through the HPCSA’s CPD system. Medical officers must generate and maintain clinical records according to minimum standards, participate in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, conduct clinical audits, and ensure protocols are followed. They may also be required to coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise and train Medical Officers and Registrars, and take on any other duties allocated by supervisors without provincial boundary restrictions. This is an OSD-graded opportunity offering a rural allowance in certain nodes, making it an expansive call for qualified medical professionals to serve across Limpopo’s hospital network.
