This is a large-scale recruitment drive for medical officers to work on a shift basis within public hospitals across Limpopo province, with posts available at three professional grades depending on experience. The positions are based at numerous district and regional hospitals throughout the province, reflecting a significant need for clinical staff in both urban and rural settings. Successful candidates will join the provincial Department of Health and provide essential medical services in facilities that operate around the clock, hence the emphasis on shift work, night duty, weekend and public holiday coverage, and overtime.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered as such. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. Candidates must be willing and able to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, and to perform commuted overtime as approved by the department’s Accounting Officer based on operational needs. Computer literacy in MS Office tools and virtual meeting platforms is essential, as is a valid driver’s licence, though the latter is waived for applicants with disabilities. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application.
The ideal candidate will possess sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for patients of all ages and sexes at district health services level. They should understand the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, apply sound medical ethics, and demonstrate good leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills. The ability to collect and analyse data, work independently after hours without supervision, and use resources rationally is also required.
Key performance areas include providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters; maintaining best practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA; generating and maintaining accurate medical records; participating in quality improvement programmes and clinical audits; ensuring adherence to clinical protocols; and supervising, instructing, and training medical officers and registrars where applicable. Additional duties may be allocated by supervisors without boundary restrictions.
Notably, the remuneration is an all-inclusive package with a rural allowance attached, and the department is filling a large number of posts across many hospitals, making this a significant opportunity for medical professionals seeking public sector service in Limpopo.
