The Department of Health in Limpopo is advertising a large intake of Medical Officer posts, with 227 vacancies available across multiple hospitals and health facilities in the province. These positions are structured within a shift system, meaning successful candidates will be expected to work flexi hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, in line with operational requirements. The roles are graded according to experience, with Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 opportunities available at various centres, ranging from regional and district hospitals to specialized facilities. The core purpose of the role is to provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, to patients across all age groups, while supporting the broader functions of the hospital and the provincial health department. Medical Officers will work in designated clinical areas and may be deployed to outreach programmes, special events, or operations across the province without boundary restrictions.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. South African citizenship or permanent residency is required. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 candidates must have less than five years of post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years after registration. The role also demands a willingness to perform overtime when needed, with commuted overtime being approved by the Accounting Officer based on the flexi or shift system and operational needs. Inherent requirements include computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, as well as a valid driver's licence, except for candidates with disabilities. A skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application.

The knowledge and skills expected include a sound understanding and application of medical theory and practice, familiarity with the legal aspects of medicine in South Africa, and solid clinical competence in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics at district health services level. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are essential, along with the ability to collect and analyse data, maintain sound medical ethics, and apply clinical governance principles. Candidates must be able to work independently after hours, without supervision, and use resources rationally.

Key performance areas include providing clinical care in designated areas, performing ward rounds, responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, and participating in disaster management. Medical Officers must maintain high standards of clinical practice through continuous professional development, generate and keep accurate medical records, and support the hospital’s quality improvement programme. They are also expected to conduct clinical audits, participate in continuing medical education and academic activities, and ensure that clinical protocols are followed. Where required, they will supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated clinical areas or disciplines. Any other duties allocated by the supervisor must be performed. The remuneration package is all-inclusive and offered according to the applicable grade, with an additional rural allowance for certain nodes.
