The Department of Health is advertising a large intake of Medical Officer posts under a shift system, with a total of 227 vacancies spread across numerous hospitals in the province. These positions are available at three occupational-specific dispensation grades, with Grade 1 offering 148 posts, Grade 2 offering 62 posts, and Grade 3 offering 17 posts. The vacancies are distributed across a wide range of district and regional hospitals, including facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Philadelphia, Kgapane, Mokopane, Elim, Ellisras, Warmbaths, and many others. This is a substantial recruitment drive that reflects the department’s need to strengthen medical staffing and ensure round-the-clock service delivery in its health facilities.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must already be registered with the HPCSA in that category. Appointment at a specific grade depends on years of appropriate and recognisable experience after registration: Grade 1 requires less than five years, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The post is inherently operational, so candidates must be willing and able to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as perform overtime when required. Commuted overtime is dependent on operational needs and must be approved by the Accounting Officer under the flexi or shift system. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms is also required, along with a valid driver’s licence unless the applicant has a disability. A skills declaration form must be attached as part of the application.
The role demands sound clinical knowledge and practical skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, covering all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Successful candidates must demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as presentation and budgeting abilities. They must understand and apply the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, uphold sound medical ethics, and work within the framework of clinical governance. The ability to collect and analyse data, work independently after hours without supervision, and use resources rationally is essential.
Key performance areas include providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters; maintaining best clinical practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA; generating and maintaining accurate clinical records; participating in the department’s quality improvement programme; conducting clinical audits; and engaging in continuing medical education and academic activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Medical officers may also be required to supervise, instruct, and train other medical officers and registrars as needed, and to perform any other duties allocated by the supervisor within the province. The remuneration is an all-inclusive package appropriate to the grade, with an additional rural allowance payable as either 18% or 22% of basic salary depending on whether the posting falls within a Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council area or an ISRDS node. This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to contribute meaningfully to public healthcare in South Africa.
