This is a large-scale recruitment initiative by the Limpopo Department of Health for Medical Officer posts under a shift-work employment model, with vacancies spread across more than thirty hospitals in the province. These include major facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Kgapane, Mokopane, and many district and rural hospitals. The posts are structured into three career grades based on years of post-registration experience, enabling both relatively new practitioners and experienced medical officers to apply at the appropriate level. Successful appointees will be expected to work flexi hours, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, and to perform commuted overtime as operational needs arise, with such overtime approved by the Accounting Officer of the Department.

Applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that category. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 candidates need less than five years of appropriate recognisable experience after registration; Grade 2 applicants need a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 applicants need at least ten years of post-registration experience. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents stubholders. A valid driver's licence is required, except for people with disabilities, and computer literacy covering MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms is essential. Applicants are also required to submit a skill declaration form as part of the application process.

The role demands sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics for patients of all ages and sexes at district health service level. Candidates should understand and apply the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, follow sound medical ethics, and have a working knowledge of clinical governance. Strong leadership, verbal and written communication, presentation and budgeting skills are needed, as is the ability to collect and analyse data. Because the post involves independent after-hours work, the ability to function without direct supervision is an inherent requirement. Rational use of resources is also expected.

The core duties include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds; undertaking outreach programmes; and delivering medical services at special events and operations across the province. Medical Officers must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including disaster situations, and maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards. This includes keeping up to date through Continuous Professional Development as required by the HPCSA, generating and maintaining accurate clinical records, participating in the hospital's Quality Improvement Programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring that clinical protocols are followed. The post also requires participation in continuing medical education and academic activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Where required, the Medical Officer will supervise, instruct and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated clinical areas or disciplines. Candidates must be willing to be deployed to any area within the province without boundary restrictions and to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor.

These are shift-based, OSD-graded posts with an all-inclusive remuneration package, and hospitals located in ISRDS nodes may qualify for an additional rural allowance of either 18% or 22% of basic salary, depending on the applicable bargaining council agreement. The availability of commuted overtime is determined by operational need and the flexi-shift system. This is a substantial recruitment drive offering medical officers the opportunity to work in a structured public-sector environment with exposure to a wide range of clinical services in both urban and rural settings.
