The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a substantial intake of 227 Medical Officer posts under a shift system, offering opportunities at Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 levels in hospitals across the province. This is a large, decentralised recruitment drive aimed at strengthening district-level clinical services, with posts based in a wide range of hospitals, from major referral centres such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, and Tshilidzini to smaller rural facilities. The role is an OSD-graded medical position, with an all-inclusive remuneration package and, for certain posts, an additional rural allowance linked to ISRDS nodes.
Candidates must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must already be registered in that capacity. The grade at which an applicant is appointed depends on recognised experience after registration: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. South African citizenship or permanent residency is a requirement, and applicants must be willing and able to work shifts, flexible hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as the service is based on operational needs. A valid driver’s licence is required except for people with disabilities, and computer literacy in MS Office applications and virtual meeting platforms is essential. A skill declaration form must accompany the application.
The Medical Officer will provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, commensurate with maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. Duties include performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes, delivering medical services at special events and operations, and responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters. The post holder must maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, engage in Continuing Professional Development as required by the HPCSA, and generate and maintain accurate clinical records. Participation in the department’s quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and adhering to clinical protocols are core responsibilities. The role also involves teaching and supervision: where required, the Medical Officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise and train junior Medical Officers and Registrars, and support undergraduate and postgraduate academic activities. In addition, the incumbent may be allocated any other duties by the supervisor in the province, without boundary restrictions.
The position demands sound clinical knowledge in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for patients of all ages and both sexes at district hospital level. Understanding of South African legal aspects relevant to medical practice, sound medical ethics, and clinical governance is essential. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, budgeting, and data collection and analysis skills are also required, along with the ability to work independently after hours without supervision and to use resources rationally. These posts are spread across all grades, with 148 Grade 1 posts, 62 Grade 2 posts, and 17 Grade 3 posts, located at hospitals throughout Limpopo. Because the selection and appointment process is aligned to the specific centres, applicants should consider their preferred location and grade when responding to the relevant centre-specific advertisement. The inherent requirements and operational demands make this particularly suited to flexible, resilient medical professionals committed to public healthcare in a provincial hospital setting.
