This is a large-scale recruitment drive for Medical Officers to fill 227 shift-based posts within the Limpopo Department of Health, spread across numerous district and regional hospitals in the province. The positions are graded at three levels, allowing opportunities for both early-career practitioners and those with substantial experience. Successful candidates will be placed at one of the many designated hospitals, from larger referral centres to smaller rural facilities, and will be expected to provide comprehensive medical care to patients of all ages and sexes. The role is central to the department's aim of strengthening district health services, with a strong emphasis on emergency care, clinical governance, and continuous quality improvement.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently maintain that registration. Experience requirements are tiered: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of post-registration experience; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The inherent requirements of the post include a willingness to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the ability to perform commuted overtime when operational needs dictate. Computer literacy in standard office tools and virtual meeting platforms is essential, and a valid driver's licence is required unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application.

The key performance areas are broad and clinically demanding. Medical Officers will provide emergency and routine clinical care in designated areas, conduct ward rounds, and participate in outreach programmes. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, and maintain best practice through continuous professional development. They are responsible for generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in the department's quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. In addition, they may be required to supervise, instruct, and train medical officers and registrars, and to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor, without boundary restrictions, meaning deployment across the province is possible.

The department is looking for candidates with sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, as well as strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills. A thorough understanding of South African medical law, ethics, and clinical governance is essential, as is the ability to work independently after hours. The remuneration package is all-inclusive and may be supplemented by a rural allowance for those serving in designated nodes. These posts offer a meaningful opportunity to contribute to public healthcare in Limpopo, with the chance to work in a variety of hospital settings and gain invaluable experience.
