This is a large-scale recruitment drive for Medical Officers to fill 227 shift-based posts within the Limpopo Department of Health, spread across a wide network of provincial and district hospitals. The roles are graded at three levels, with 148 posts at Grade 1, 62 at Grade 2, and 17 at Grade 3, and successful candidates will be placed at facilities ranging from major tertiary hospitals such as Pietersburg and Mankweng to smaller rural institutions like Evuxakeni, Hayani, and Witpoort. The positions are designed to strengthen clinical service delivery across the province, with an emphasis on emergency care, inpatient management, and community outreach. Appointees will work within a shift system that includes night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and may be required to perform commuted overtime based on operational needs and approval by the Accounting Officer.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. South African citizenship or permanent residency is required. Experience requirements are tiered according to the grade applied for: Grade 1 candidates need less than five years of appropriate post-registration experience; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Inherent to the post is a willingness to work flexible shifts and overtime, as well as computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required unless the applicant has a disability, and a skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application.

The role demands a broad and sound clinical knowledge base, including general medical, surgical, and anaesthetic skills applicable to all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Practitioners must understand and apply the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, uphold sound medical ethics, and demonstrate knowledge of clinical governance. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are essential, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. The work requires independence, particularly after hours, and the rational use of resources.

Key performance areas include providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and participating in outreach programmes; and delivering medical services at special events and operations across the province. Medical Officers must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, and maintain best practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. They are responsible for generating and maintaining accurate clinical records, participating in the department’s quality improvement programmes, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring adherence to clinical protocols. In addition, they may be required to supervise, instruct, and train junior Medical Officers and Registrars, and to perform any other duties allocated by supervisors without boundary restrictions. The remuneration package is all-inclusive and may include a rural allowance for those placed at ISRDS nodes, reflecting the department’s commitment to attracting doctors to underserved areas.
