This large-scale recruitment drive is for 227 shift-based Medical Officer posts within the Limpopo Department of Health, spread across a wide range of district and regional hospitals. The vacancies are divided into Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 positions, with the grade determined by the number of years of appropriate experience gained after registration as an independent medical practitioner. Successful candidates will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care in a hospital environment, working flexible shifts which include night duty, weekends and public holidays, and to perform commuted overtime when operational needs require it)Skip. The posts are located at numerous hospitals throughout the province, including both larger referral centres and smaller rural facilities.
Applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that category. For entry at Grade 1, less than five years of appropriate experience after registration is required. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, while Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years of post-registration experience. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The inherent requirements of the post include a willingness to work shifts and flexi hours, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, as well as a willingness to perform overtime when necessary. Commuted overtime is approved by the Accounting Officer of the Department based on the flexi or shift system and operational needs. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms is required, along with a valid driver’s licence, except for people with disabilities. A skill declaration form must also be submitted.
The role demands sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, as well as a thorough understanding of the legal aspects relevant to medical practice in South Africa. Candidates need strong clinical skills covering general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Good leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills are essential, together with the ability to collect and analyse data. The post requires sound medical ethics, knowledge and application of clinical governance, the capacity to work after hours independently and without supervision, and the rational use of resources.
Key performance areas include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas and maintaining the standards required for registration as a medical practitioner. Medical officers will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes and provide medical services at special events and operations across the province. They must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including in disaster situations. Practitioners are expected to maintain best clinical practice according to quality standards, update themselves through the Continuing Professional Development system, and generate and keep clinical records in line with minimum standards. They will participate in the Department and hospital quality improvement programmes, ensure policies and procedures are followed, conduct clinical audits, and take part in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Where required, they will ensure clinical protocols are followed, coordinate clinical responsibilities, and supervise, instruct and train medical officers and registrars in designated clinical areas. They may also be allocated any other duties by the supervisor across the province without boundary restrictions.
These positions are remunerated with an all-inclusive package and, where applicable, a rural allowance for service in identified ISRDS nodes. Because the vacancies span multiple grades and dozens of hospitals, applicants should carefully match their experience level and centre preference when applying. The posts offer an opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo, with clear progression from Grade 1 through to Grade 3 based on recognised post-registration experience.
