The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large intake of 227 Medical Officer posts, all on a shift-based system, at an extensive network of hospitals across the province. These positions are structured across three occupational grades, with Grade 1 aimed at clinicians who have less than five years of post-registration experience, Grade 2 requiring a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requiring at least ten years of experience after registration as an Independent Medical Practitioner with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The posts are spread across a wide range of facilities, from tertiary and regional hospitals such as Pietersburg and Mankweng to district hospitals like Elim, Sekororo, and Warmbaths, giving successful candidates the opportunity to work in diverse clinical settings within the provincial health system.

The core role of the Medical Officer is to provide comprehensive clinical care that is commensurate with the requirements for maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. This includes emergency care, ward rounds, and the delivery of medical services in designated clinical areas, as well as participation in outreach programmes and special events or operations across the province. Medical Officers must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including in disaster situations, and must maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards. The post demands a strong commitment to continuous professional development, with doctors expected to update themselves through the HPCSA’s CPD systemate> and to participate in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The role also involves conducting clinical audits, participating in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, and ensuring that clinical protocols are followed. Where required, the Medical Officer may coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in one or more designated clinical areas or disciplines.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered as such. They must be either South African citizens or permanent residents. The inherent requirements of the job include a willingness and ability to work shifts and flexible hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the ability to perform overtime when the need arises. Commuted overtime will be approved by the Accounting Officer of the department based on operational needs within the flexi or shift system. Computer literacy is essential, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for applicants with disabilities who are exempt from this condition. In addition, a skill declaration form must be attached to the application.

Ideal candidates will have sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level, as well as a thorough understanding of the legal aspects relevant to South African medical practice. Good leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are important, as is the ability to collect and analyse data. The department values strong medical ethics, an understanding and application of clinical governance, the ability to work after hours independently without supervision, and the rational use of resources. The successful candidates will be expected to generate and maintain clinical records in accordance with minimum standardsaine. These posts are graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for medical officers, with an all-inclusive remuneration package and, for qualifying posts, a rural allowance linked to ISRDS nodes. Given the large number of vacancies across dozens of hospitals, these roles offer meaningful opportunities for both junior and senior medical officers to contribute to public health service delivery in Limpopo.
